Day 17
We practiced Stop to thrown articles on our morning walk, Erik is generally getting good at this even stopping when I throw his ball if I haven’t released him to Chase the ball with ‘Get it’. We also had another go at the permanent blind today. First time Erik drifted off so I called him back and resent. He locked on really well the second time.
Day 18
No training
Day 19
We practiced Stop to thrown article again when out on our walk with good success and started two more permanent blinds in a second regular walking area. Later on the walk we did some hunting with stop to thrown article, on first one he ran in but got all the rest correct. It seems that when he is distracted he sometimes can’t stop even after I have blown the stop whistle. On Erik’s second we walk did a small amount of hunting with some stops to the whistle which worked well. I am working up to having a training session in a rabbit pen to teach Erik the next stage in Stop to the flush.
Day 20
We had a group session booked and had a lovely time in the sunshine for a change. Erik managed some quiet periods and some noisy periods. He did some great work on distractions whilst retrieving when we practiced blind retrieves to a post past a pigeon in a cage. He also managed to do some stops with the pigeon as a distraction. He struggled with waiting whilst everyone else had a go at things but he was steady on the retrieves being thrown and managed to self-manage for most of the time off lead with a couple of errors but he returned when called without getting the retrieve.
So I think that I am not going to do group training for the time being as Erik is just practicing the squeaking and that is not going to be helping forward progress. He is pretty steady and knows that it is not his turn all the time but it is no fun for either of us and I feel it is not very productive training at the moment.
